Thanks to Bryan and Kim Dickerson for emailing this review to reviews@scorpsboard.com!

Thanks to the Lake Highlands group that again put on one great show and to God for giving us a bit of a breeze to make it not so blazingly hot and humid!!

Legend of Texas 47.00

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

I was impressed with the enthusiasm with this group. They did very well and didn't try to do too much "big corps" stuff. Keep it up and *maybe* in a couple years you will have some more members to work with and to do some "big corps" stuff.

Allegiance Elite 50.75

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

I didn't know that video games had so much music, but then again I'm not into video games much these days. Not bad though, just needs more time and attention.

Tarheel Sun 57.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Good overall show, even doing Channel One that has been done so much in recent years. Very good job taking some license with one of the main sections of it, but that's what jazz is: a very refined art of "borrowing" and taking license.

Troopers 67.25

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Very good show playing essentially some of the same tunes as they have played for years, without *sounding* like they've played them for years. They really did have a lot of fun with the show and that is one of the most important things, isn't it?!

Southwind 77.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

This was the first show that really grabbed me and pulled me in. And how!! I don't remember the last time that I heard so appealing a rendition of a Holst suite and the Legends of the Fall and Liszt pieces were very well done also. Crown better keep up the good work, otherwise they better be wearing their asbestos underwear, as they might get burned from behind. They used to be from Alabama, right? Guess they found a really good pool of talent and Lexington! Keep it up!

Carolina Crown 79.50

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Excellent show! A minute or two into it, I began to think that The Mask of Zorro was an "mask" to hide a lot of other Spanish drum corps faves under, but they avoided that and put a very nice rendition of some very good music on the field. Really nice rifle work and very nice horns!

Phantom Regiment 82.95

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Here's another show that I DESPERATELY wanted to like. Being an alumnus, I REALLY wanted the Regiment to pull something off like in '93 that was "Regiment," but pulled the crowd in. Many other reviews have been so positive, that I could contribute this to the heat, or other factors. But I was a little bit disappointed. But hey, there's still 3 more weeks and they are making progress point-wise.

Blue Knights 84.65

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

This show like many Blue Knights shows in the past has all the technical elements present, but lacks the emotion to reach out, grab me and pull me into the show. I wanted to like them, but I just couldn't get into it. Best of luck though, as there is definitely some talent there to pull it off.

Santa Clara Vanguard 86.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Really nice show! VERY Santa Clara. Constant motion. This show will again bring SCV to the forefront where they belong. The Age of Reverence theme fits very well. Watch and listen for the really big chord at the end of the Barber Adagio for Strings. Awesome!

The Cadets 89.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Wow!!! Wow!!! This is one whale of a show! It's got everything you ever wanted in a drum corps show... and more! There are still some marching things to attend to in rehearsal, and one or two music things in the opener that were just on the brink of coming apart. So it's a real credit to the kids that they pulled it back together with not much lost. I also can't see that they were 3+ points better than Santa Clara. If they're knocking at 90 now, where do they go in 3 weeks time?

Thanks to Tim Huskey for emailing this review to reviews@scorpsboard.com!

I will be agreeing mostly with the other review [above] on this site, but hope to give a different angle.

Legend of Texas 47.00

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Very creative use of props and GE to keep the audience interested. The kids seemed to be having fun and the crowd did too. I agree that with some more time and TLC this corps could be going places.

Allegiance Elite 50.75

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

I was not overall impressed with this group. They just seemed blah. The music, though different, was not interesting, and I think with the music being from a video game that someone was overdoing their love of video games. I can't wait for that Super Mario Brothers just that Blue Devils will do next year!! ;-)

Tarheel Sun 57.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

These guys (and gals, too) seemed to be very loose and relaxed out in the blazing Texas heat. They originally had tops on that looked straight out of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I looked and saw the were doing a jazz show (a very good one at that). Well, they pulled off their tops and went with uniforms that were as bright as the Texas sun. This corps could be up and coming. Just need more time.

Troopers 67.25

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Yes, they've been around a long time and are highly respected, but now I understand why they haven't been in the Top 12 for sometime - boring. They did not have any fire or any enthusiasm for what they were playing. Do they ever not play Americana? I haven't heard it!

Southwind 77.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

I agree with the other review. This corps really grabbed me. Their sound is rich and very lush, which Holst and Liszt must be. Their marching was very tight and well put together. I agree that Carolina Crown should be looking closely in their rearview mirror - Southwind is closing in.

Carolina Crown 79.50

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Eah, it was good, and there were some nice passages, but I didn't think the show had any fire whatsoever. It lacked a drive and passion. They color guard did do a very fine job. I watched them most of the time, because nothing in the perc/brass really grabbed me.

Phantom Regiment 82.95

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

This group has been one of my favorites in the past. They really took the music to a new level. They didn't disappoint here. Playing influential pieces of the 20th Century, Debussy's Jeux, Schoenberg's Transfigured Night, and Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, the Regiment brought music I didn't think would fit on the field and played exceedingly difficult music very well. I think their marching needs some cleanup, but they will be right up there.

Blue Knights 84.65

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

A higher level version of Carolina Crown. Very well put together, but no fire whatsoever.

Santa Clara Vanguard 86.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

This was a great show and completely SCV. The great, gorgeous sound, dramatic, with the different ending. They end soft, much like Miss Saigon where they ended playing softly in the tunnel. They didn't have a tunnel to go to. If any other corps besides Cadets were there, SCV would have been the best, but.....

The Cadets 89.85

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

I watched Cadets practice that day. They did not look good. Little things were falling apart and just were not getting together. Well, guess what, when the lights come on, the champions come out to play. And play they did!! And march!! And dance, and twirl, and make you wanna scream at the amazing things they did. Remember the Z pull? Well now they swirl out a diamond and swirl it back in an effortless motion. Beware, they have a set where they play each others instruments, even the brass. Its something you have to see to believe. Thank goodness they played again after the awards ceremony. I then could believe it. Watch the brass very close. The show was based on time and it was beautiful to see all the references to time in their show.

This was my first DCI show to see live and was very glad to be apart of it. Lake Highlands HS did a great job and were very gracious hosts. The only problem was that DCI rules do not allow water coolers in the stadium? Come on!! When its 100+ degrees out, somebody's gotta have some common sense, especially when they are selling water for $2.50.

Thanks for the opportunity to spout. I appreciate it.
