Thanks to Doug for emailing his review to reviews@scorpsboard.com! |
Nice evening for the kickoff show here on the west coast. I'll start with the div 2/3.
Patriots Praise: It said in the program that this was the Patriots from NY, defending DCI div. 2 champions. And this small very young corp. came out. I was like, what happened? Is this their cadet unit that came west. But a mistake in the program had them mixed up. How can you make a mistake like that. Anyway, very young corp. Nice show. A sort of Arabian theme show. Hope they do well in the future.
SCV Cadets: New unis make them look very mature. Nice size and the quality is very good. They should do well this year.
Mandarins: Bigger this year. They must be competing in div. 2 this year. Beautiful show. Drumline is smoking. Great snares. Colorguard is very talented. Nice sound. Division 2 title perhaps. We'll see.
Blue Devils B: Well, a very nice show. They're smaller than the previous corps but they have a nice look. New unis also. Musical program is very BD. They'll improve in the weeks ahead.
Renegades: Nice quality sound. Great soloists. Drumline is so cool. They play very traditional drum corps Latin music. Lots of Madison, BD, Bridgemen songs. Very entertaining.
Santa Clara Vanguard: Nice show. They star tout slow, then build to a climax. Typical sounding SCV. Low brass sound, dark percussion licks. Colorguard is solid but not really in the class as BD or Cadets. They didn't do a closer. They really isn't anything wrong with the show but it didn't have that "oh my god" feel like last years show. I know it's just the first show but even last years first show, you can tell that was something special. Right now, it doesn't have it. But you can't count them out.
Blue Devils: I didn't know when they announced they're musical selection if I would like it. WOW. The opener is so cool. The hornline is just simply amazing. Amazing in the sense of the sound and the horn book. This must be the most difficult music selection they have ever done. The show is so clean and fast. Colorguard again is top notch. The drumline is also great. The North by Northwest piece between the hornline and drumline is great. The ending didn't look finished. All in all, they sound contend for another title. They have it all.
