Editorial notes:

The Cascades: Good opening corps. My first time to see this corps and they're a good indication that drum corps is alive and well in the American Northwest. While they still have a bit of cleaning to do, they had a solid program that was quite entertaining. Good job.

Allegiance Elite: I don't know that I wanted to see another "Africa" show, but they did a nice job. However, tonight they seemed a little flat. While the hornline was much cleaner than the previous corps (The Cascades), they didn't have quite the same energy level. I look forward to seeing how they improve by Florida.

Troopers: OK--the Troopers are NOT down-and-out as I've been reading on "Scorpsboard." While they still have some cleaning to do, I thought they had a great show. No, the guard isn't what it's been in the past, but they did a great job of selling their program. I really look forward to seeing their final polished product in Orlando. Keep up the good work!

Les Etoiles: Awesome show! I like Les Etoiles. I like the driving beat and the disonant music. I like their attitude! The guard rocks. As their score reflects, this is the first corps of the night that went to the next level. While their not quite playing with the "big boys/girls," they definitely have a clean, rockin' show.

Carolina Crown: Talk about a package! Boy have the Crown got it all: wonderful music, an exciting drill and a kickin' guard. From the beginning to end it was a feast for the eyes and ears. While they won't break into the "elite" Top 6, it's such a wonderful show that proves that more and more it's becoming the elite Top 8, or Top 10, or even Top 12. Wonderful show Carolina!!!

Bluecoats: Way to go Blue!!! I'm a local boy, so it's not hard to get enthusiastic about the Bluecoats, but way to go!!! Definitely one of the best overall packages that the 'Coats have put on the field. The hornline was smokin' and I appreciated the energy of the guard. They were nippin' on the heals of Phantom tonight and they deserved to be there.

Phantom Regiment: Hmmmm... This is not the Regiment of the past or, actually, maybe it is and that's the problem. I didn't see anything new or innovative tonight. It was the same old, same old Phantom. While every corps builds on their past, they certainly don't need to dwell on it. While there were parts of the show I really did enjoy, overall I was disappointed. I certainly hope they're able to find the spark they need to really ignite this show before Finals, because this show seems to be waiting to happen.

Madison Scouts: Madison was without a doubt top dog of the evening. While I'm usually not a huge Madison fan, I really enjoyed this show. I loved the guard's wearing of the corps proper uniforms for the opener and doing the "retro" guard work. The hornline was smokin' (as usual) and the drum line and pit were right in their with the rest. I thought the show was a little more subtle than the past, not so in-your-face, and I like that. From what I've been reading of the top four, Madison may not be able to break past fifth place, but a solid fifth place it should be. Great job guys!!!

My favorites:

Color Guard: Carolina Crown
Music: Madison, Bluecoats
G.E.: Carolina Crown
Visual: Madison
Overall Show: Carolina Crown
