Editorial notes:

Having missed the Chieftans and Generations while I was busy meeting old friends in the parking lot, I'll have to skip any review of these two up and coming drum corps.

My viewing started with the Bushwackers who, as usual, have a technically advanced show (maybe a little too advanced for the size and talent available) but lack any type of general effect punch. A good show concept is in there somewhere, but it's difficult to find. Horns are mediocre, drums are unfortunately not as strong as past years and color guard and visual is bland.

Next up was the Sunrisers who present a Russian themed show with music that is familiar to many drum corps fans. I feel they have a strong show concept that is much improved from Bridgeport but still needs that little something extra to really give it a push into finals...something I'm not sure the very young corps has as of yet. But they are definitely headed in the right direction. A very strong horn section considering the size of the line, drums were definitely "on" tonight also with a strong book, visually enticing and color guard with best package and presentation of the night but a few too many individual break downs.

The Caballeros were next with their familiar Spanish themed show. This one is extra familiar if you saw Madison a few years ago, but they do carry it off pretty well. Also a strong show concept here but 'spotty'. The Cabs first minute to minute and a half is very exciting as usual. The show drops off from there but is still the strongest thing out there tonight. Horn book is solid but many individuals are heard sticking out, and I don't mean the soloists. I feel the drum line is not as strong as they think they are; meaning: they should play more within themselves and not try so hard to win the caption. Color guard and visual is respectable but I feel not as well staged and written as the Sunrisers. By the way, the gold vests are beautiful up close, but are completely lost in the stands...it looks like it's just gold lamee. Finally, the host Hurricanes.

Surprisingly improved from previous years (read Ben Hur), but watching the Hurcs is like looking into a bag of Skittles. Green uniform tops, red drums, electric blue pants on the guard, purple flags, yellow topped boxes for standing/dancing on...it's just a little too much. Horn line is good with unfortunately the usual standouts carrying the rest of the line. Drum line is also good, but the snares spend a lot of time behind drum sets. Visually ok and the guard is not quite in the same league as the rest of tonights corps. Too much body and dance work which can't be carried off by the talent on hand.

Overall, a pretty good showing by all corps tonight. Placements were as follows: 1) Cabs, 2) Sun, 3) Hurcs, 4) Bush, 5) Gens, 6) Chiefs
