Editorial notes:

Lone Star -51.5- They are still, for the fourth year in a row, are still trying to get back to the Div. III finals, but they just can't seem to find the right show. This could possibly be the year. They play a very entertaining rendition of many John Tesh songs and are sounding good they just need to solve a few technical problems in the brass section and the marching.

Boston Crusaders -70.1- Again the Boston Crusaders put a spirited and entertaining show on the field. This years show is titled Seascapes. Tonight they wowed the crowd with a good opening number, Seahawk, good control of the dynamic ranges and loud ringing releases. In Captain from Castille things began to fall apart a little with visual problems, but the music was very colorful. Finally, they brought back an old favorite, Conquest, this song along with the visual package was just awesome. This was the cap on a truly fantastic show.

Spirit of Atlanta -73.8- The glory days of the Spirit of Atlanta have come again in 1998. They were loud and extremely entertaining from start to finish. The best parts of the show are the middle when the play Way Up and Down the Suwanee River and make it sound so heavenly and Sweet Georgia Brown which is the best part of the show. They could be the corps to watch around semi-finals time and take 12th. Also watch for a few new items in the show in the coming days.

Carolina Crown -79.8- Due to a bad burger at the concession stand I did not see the Carolina Crown.

The Cavaliers -89.9- These guys could take the whole thing by the way things are looking. Traditions For A New Era is the best show they have ever put on the field this decade. It's non-stop power percussion and very smooth brass from start to finish. These guys just need to clean a few spots here and there. They are on their way to a Third DCI title in the 90's.

Editorial notes:

First of all, thank goodness there was a breeze and the temperature dropped below 100. It was a hot humid day again and most of the corps members seemed tired. Who can blame them.

Allegiance Elite (50.6) - An uninspired effort. They seemed really down. They are a very young group and just need more time to grow.

Troopers (52.9) - Certainly not what I expected. They just seemed to lack any punch and power. M&M problems are all over the place, the guard is not very good, and the musical book is just not there yet.

Les 'Etoiles (67.5) - I loved this corps. What a fun, high energy show, Their spinning drumline bit is a gas. I think they will be one of the top small corps when its all said and done. They certainly didn't let the weather conditions affect their performance, at rehearsal either. And they travel in school buses folks.

Colts (76.8) - I love this show too. I'm glad to see them improved over last year, at least in my opinion. Their guard is still a long way away. They are definitely their weak spot. The hornline is still not very tight in spots and the M&M is in and out. The percussion seemed pretty solid to me. I thought they were better than the Crossmen.

Crossmen (78.5) - Maybe it was because they were after Madison, or maybe it was because the Methany stuff doesn't work for me, but I thought this was a boring show. That aside, their marching was horrible. Fix those spacing problems will ya, even if you have holes. Tight percussion, average guard and kind of a weak hornline. I was disappointed.

Bluecoats (80.1) - Is it me, was it the heat, or is it that Blue just doesn't have that killer, screaming soprano line this year. I love the show and love the arrangements, especially Summertime. M&M is a problem. Percussion was solid. I didn't notice the guard. The hornline over all is still not very tight (except at times). If they get that fixed and get those sopranos screaming this show will be killer.

Madison Scouts (83.7) - The cream of this crop anyway. I must say that I love this show, especially the middle set. I think they are right on target. I had heard that their percussion was weak but I thought they were on tonight. There is still several weak M&M spots to work out. The guard is fantastic and the hornline had to get high marks here. I haven't been able to see the others but I don't see why Madison won't be contenders this year.

Editorial notes:

Just a few quick comments. Today's 100+ degree heat made for some tired corps members, as was obvious near the end of rehearsals.

Allegiance Elite - Overall, a decent show from the Alberta group and was especially true from a percussion standpoint. Several good brass moments as well, especially the midhorns.

Troopers - Show seems to be a bit ambitious for the membership, but the show is written well. With three weeks left, look for significant improvement.

Colts - Not impressed at all. Percussion book was VERY boring. Even the percussion "feature" sounded like the rest of the show music. The brass did a good job until near the end. Kudos to the bari line--fantastic sound. Only time this year that I heard mellophone range stuff, only to look and see the big barrels of the bari line staring back at me--great writing Chuck.

Bluecoats - Warning-bias ahead - I marched two years with Blue and was pleasantly surprised by this years show. The concept sounded hokey at first, but don't be fooled. The brass was quite good and the percussion line which was a problem several years ago, seems to be driving the corps(Kudos to Bill Bachman and those tenors). Only problems for the crew seem to be some feet and the guard, which did not look good at all on this night. Nice job to former Railmen pit player, Samantha, in her second year with the Blue Crew.

Madison Scouts - I saw Madison rehearse twice in my hometown earlier in the year, and I must say that the improvement has been great. The drumline is good, the brass is good, and the guard is good. The only thing holding them back is the feet. A friend and fellow drum corps vet stated that Madison was one visual caption head away from 1st place. That seems to be the underlying case with every corps I have seen this year. The crowd tonight was celebrating the final home show of Drum Major Bob Guinn, with whom I am good friends and with whom I marched for two years at Railmen. Nice job, Bob. Don't forget former Railmen member Andy Smith, also of Omaha. He has one more year to march. Both of these guys are class acts who hail from Railmen country, with which I spent three great summers of my youth.

Crossmen - I don't know why the Crossmen were scheduled after Scouts tonight, but it didn't help their cause. What a disappointment. The Drumline is quite good, as usual, but the brass is stumbling. They got very, very tired near the end of the show and the music and drill were hurt by that fact. The truth is, the drill is written quite poorly, and the guard, which has been touted as one of the best, not incorporated into the drill at all. They were often found in unrelated forms on the separate side of the field. Again, feet were a major problem.

Just my opinions folks. This show was attended rather well and the stadium was going through major renovations, so look for the show to continue to be a major pull for good corps. It was also good to see all of the Railmen folks out in force tonight. It still saddens me to not see the red, white, and gold on the field, but that seems to be a recurring theme in the activity.
