Editorial notes:

This is my first review this year, so bear with me and flame away if you must! This is long--I am pumped and here it comes:

First, general observations of the show itself:

DCI Mid-America returned to Champaign, IL tonight. It was a fabulous night for a drum corps event--the temperature was in the 80's most of the day and settled, with a few breezes, into the 70's for the show. Very little clouds. Not oppressive in heat (like it was in Oklahoma where I spent the last 3 days on business). Perfect.

Memorial Stadium at the campus of U of I is a great venue for drum corps. I was sad when it left town a couple of years ago and I am quite glad it returned. There are few bad seats in the stadium. The balcony is a huge overhang, making it quite shady for most of the lower deck. There seemed to be a good crowd (I'll guess--oh, 7500 or so). One frustration I plan to share with DCI--the show was advertised quite well among the DCI following, but locally, the show was not given its proper billing. The Champaign-Urbana area and downstate Illinois are avid marching fans (hs, college, and drum corps) and many people who don't follow DCI closely, but love it, were completely unaware that a show was coming to town. The local newspaper did an article in their features section (not front section) on Friday, but TOO MANY people said to me in the last week, "OH, there's a DCI show in town...if I had known, I would have planned to go!" In local publicity, you blew it, DCI! There could have been easily 15K at the show (even with BD, Cavs, Cadets, and SCV ALL in Texas---HMMM!) if downstate publicity had been done correctly!

All aspects of the show were well executed, except for the fraqs in the sound system and microphone at isolated points...been to many events at Memorial Stadium over the last 11 years, and never heard that type of feedback and mike failure before.

I heard many say that Phantom gave a nice clinic before the show, and there was a good number of people who soaked up the DCI judges' clinic immediately before the show. The show ran smoothly, began promptly at 7:30 and was finished at a reasonable hour. I and my friends were in the car, back home, I picked up my car, ran to Burger King, and made it to my office --all in time to send out scores by no later than 11:15 PM! Way it ought to be!

Now for the corps reviews:

Troopers--Score: 58.2 First off the line were the Troopers. They are a sentimental favorite of most of us drum corps nuts, and tonight, I was quite sentimental--and sad. They are indeed struggling as I have heard on RAMD. They are much smaller than I remember even last year...and the program is overly ambitious. The music airs heavy on the dissonant side, and this leave the corps overly exposed when, musically, they aren't that strong. The color guard is lost--they seem to be less experienced a group, and haven't gotten it together. Although they struggle, they work hard to perform their show...I heard someone say that it has made great strides recently. Many places, esp. in the guard, looked like they were still learning fresh material. I don't mean to sound discouraging...I am proud of their resilience and persistence to participate in the activity. Keep pushing...but I agree with others who have said that they should be Div II. Brings an interesting point...if they were Div. II, they wouldn't make it far there either, IMHO. We love you, Troopers! Keep at it!

Les Etoiles--Score: 67.1 What a cool group! I loved them the once or twice I saw them last year, and they are a pleasure to see again! They performed very cleanly both visually and musically. The demand level is not as high in either area as last year's show, I think. They had a good balance and intonation was nice. Visually, the show doesn't jump at you...but I like their use of small clusters (aka Magic, SCV, etc.) The cool spot of the show in the closer was the pit rolling on to the field and rolling over the guard who appeared lying on their back spinning brightly colored flags...good GE...the rotating tom players is still tres cool...but suggestion, find something to do to snaz it up a bit...last year, it was phenomenal...look for something to make it unique for '98. Great show! Congrats!

Pioneer--Score: 67.4 Does anyone think that this is a low score? So did the crowd...here's why: Pioneer went on second right after Troopers, and "Irish In Your Face" it was! They got the crowd really roused and going! There is a bit of demand in the show both visually and musically. The music is quite recognizable. A friend with me, at DCI for the first time, starting whistlin' Irish Washerwoman right away! He loved it! After they performed, he remarked "Wow! I guess they must be one of the top corps!"--He meant the top 2 or 3! Tee-hee! You can imagine his face as each new corps entered the field! Pioneer is a top corps, a damn good one, and one of the top 15 or so! Newsflash: Their score was deserved tonight...the drill is cleaning up, but slowly. Moreover, it was a bad night musically...I heard them the 2 shows at DeKalb, and they played better both nights...they have had mucho power, but lots of fraq'ed notes and poor releases, intonation wobbles...a friend and former student leaned over to me and said, "You know, we love 'em when they're loud even if they are out of tune!" Pioneer, great show...keep improving! We love the show, great crowd appeal...just a bad music night!

Colts--Score: 78.6 I love this show! It has indeed grown on me. They have cleaned up many drill spots, and the guard is improving, musically it builds--but I am not convinced that their progress is fast enough for finals. The show was OK tonight, but nothing sparkled like it did at DCM finals a couple of weeks ago! I noticed the drill cleaning up gradually (it helps that I was on the upper deck!) but don't recall anything sticking out in the show...maybe this was just the show that I phased out and took my personal out-of-body intermission! A definite jump over the first three corps in performance level, and the score reflected it...I wouldn't have gone quite high as 78.6 though. Nice job!

Magic of Orlando--Score: 80.1 What decadent, down-right fun! First time I have seen them this year. From beginning to end, a great time for the crowd and the corps! They are very aware of their strengths (volume, gut power, and sex appeal!) and they sell those strengths quite well. Bluesy, and gutsy! They pumped it out in the opener, and then they turned up the volume--WOW! A collective gasp and reaction of satisfaction was heard from all true drum corps fans! Their weakness has been visual performance and demand for some time, IMHO, and it still is! I will say that it is a better visual package than I remember having seen from Magic, but it is still quite sloppy in places. They do make good use of small clusters in field placement, but don't do much except between the 30's. They love tight clusters where they can wallow in the sound of the volume being cranked up! Guard is good, and portrays the sexy, bluesy style quite well...but is not as uniform in performance as I would like to see! Maybe I will be more aware of details when I see it again next week!

Bluecoats--Score: 81.9 Go, BBLLUUUUUUUEEEEEE! What a nice package--again, my first viewing this season. I think that this is probably the best total package from Bluecoats I have seen ( I did like the World War I or II show, I believe '94?)! The colorguard did a nice job augmenting the music, the theme, and the visual package. Good use of colors for the seasons. A better Bluecoats guard than I remember--again, a nice total package! The drill is quite nice...I really like the beginning sequence with the guard in the center portion of the field. I can see how they were beating Phantom at one point in the season...they could again, if they clean up the drill a bit. Also, I was a tad disappointed in the soloists' performance tonight...maybe it was just an off night...but the typical Bluecoats sop soloists/ensembles didn't quite seem to have control over their pitches! Yes, I know that they are in the stratosphere...but relative to past years' soloists, it wasn't a good night for them. The power is there, the jazz is there, the visual package is nice, will be mighty interesting...Autumn Leaves, Thank you! Thank you! One of my favorites--I love it! Not too sure about that "sequel is coming" ending chord, however! 4th place was right tonight.

Phantom Regiment--Score: 82.2 Ok, first of all, I am one of the many RAMD'ers who has lamented the down year of Phantom in our discussions. I was sorely disappointed both nights at DeKalb (although they improved in the finals at DCM). I was not convinced that they could improve enough to rise to the top 6. Well, I'll be damned! Congratulation, PR--you have started to kick it in! The show is much cleaner visually and musically. The drill has interest and appeal now. The power of Phantom past is starting to return! The quality of the musical sound is getting richer and fuller! The colorguard should receive an award for the improvement they have made in the last two weeks! The visual demand and GE potential of the show is not nearly as high as previous years' show, but I like it better than the Ring! I hated the Ring, by the way! The new flags since DeKalb (two-tone with a single Graeco-Roman "key-cut" design) are visually effective in the Appian Way. With continued progress, I still see them 7 or 8, but definitely on the rise! The crowd seemed to love them, and expected them in 2nd place...not entirely sure that they didn't deserve it!

Crossmen--Score: 84.7 Hmmm...interesting reaction to seeing the Crossmen for the first time this year! The crowd enjoyed their show, but not nearly as much as Phantom's. Going after Madison certainly had its effect on the crowd reaction. The music is nice, and nicely played--very solid throughout the entire show! But I am not sure that there was enough ebb'n'tide, high'n'low, sturm'n'drang for me...it just bubbled along mostly! The color guard is still one of the more spectacular among the top corps, but not as dramatically so as last year. The drill is mostly a free-form drill, with some really cool moments, and a lot of demand...but it is not nearly clean enough to be beating Phantom by 2.5 points overall!!! Lots of missteps and missed spots...phasing and spacing--bleah! Something to be said for demand, but also for cleanliness! Two other notes on first viewing: (1) Because there is wide variation in the corps members' body sizes (nothing to insinuate rudeness here, just typical height and build variation but more than many corps project), the uniforms serve to amplify that variation. This only magnifies the visual sloppiness! Hmmm...rethink the uniform black/white split. (2) The guard is great...just one step shy of fantastic...the performance needs something that is a wow'er like in last years opener. A tad more energy, and a couple of higher impact points, IMHO.

Madison Scouts--Score: 87.5 A little low, on the point scale, I think! I guessed 88.something! Did the crowd love them? Absolutely! Were they hot? Phenomenally! They cooked from beginning to end...I was not overly impressed with the program at DeKalb, but enjoyed them greatly...now they are really clicking! The guard was phenomenal tonight...THE rifle toss was right on tonight! From the upper deck, I saw what creativity they have put in the visual book, and it is cleaning up rapidly! It was so much more cohesive to me now that I see the intricacy of the drill. The soloists were fiery tonight, and the place rocked. There was a definite jump in the quality level, and everyone seemed to know that Madison was going to win tonight...even the fans who haven't been following the season to date. I missed the encore, and I bet it was great!

A fantastic show, great fans, and hot performances by all the corps overall! The quality level of performance is up this year, IMHO. Congrats, kids, for all the hard work!

I have summary comments I will send in a separate message! sorry for the length of the review, but I was/am psyched. Can't wait for Ypsilanti next week!

Editorial notes:

Troopers - Not Bad! I was impressed more than I thought I would have been. This corps did a good job.

Les Etoiles - Although this corps is small, it was great! I loved the spinning percussion at the end! Also great color guard when the front ensemble was wheeled out onto the field.

Pioneer - Great Irish theme. They're show this year is much better than Riverdance last year. This corps was a real treat and you could see a lot of improvement compared to last year.

Colts - WOW!!! What a show!!! This corps never ceases to amaze me!!! This show was definitely the best I have of seen them this year. What an improvement from the Burlington show. They were on task and it was AWESOME!!! This corps was the only one that gave me goose bumps. I was totally disappointed in their scoring tonight. They should have definitely beat Magic. Their tone quality is so much better than Magic and so was their marching (but that's just my opinion). Watch out because this corps is on the move!

Magic of Orlando - This show was good but remember that volume isn't everything! Their tone was not as good as last year. Their color guard was alright but not totally clean. This is a jazz show and definitely a crowd pleaser if you like loud and out of tune playing.

Bluecoats - A total shocker yet very beautiful playing at the same time. Again, I was disappointed in scoring. I thought they were better than Phantom Regiment. The guard was very consistent and together. Keep up the good work.

Phantom Regiment - This corps did not take my breath away like it had in the past. I think it was weak until the last number where it started to pick up some excitement. Still, I was not very impressed. Guard was together all the time tonight. I like the new guard outfits, they contrast good with the rest of the corps.

Crossmen - This show did not impress me at all. I guess I'm looking for a melody I can hum on the way out of the stadium. I definately don't think 2nd place was very good for this corps as far as crowd pleasing is concerned. A lot of people around me were let down. Maybe it was because they followed Madison.

Madison Scouts - As you would probably expect, they got first. This years show is not as good last years by far but still they are a powerhouse corps and pleased all of the people in the stadium (which were mostly Madison fans). Guard once again is superb!!! 5 costume changes keep the corps vibrant and interesting. In The Hall of the Mountain King was hilarious when they tip toed around the field. This show was AWESOME!

Please remember that I am only a spectator and I realize that my point of view will not be the same as others and that I am not a judge, just a musician that loves DCI.

Editorial notes:

It was a perfect night weather-wise. Temp in the mid 70s, no rain. The U of I stadium was full on the concert side between the 5 yard lines, up to row 60 or so. I don't know if there was anyone on the upper deck - couldn't see from where we were under the deck. They were having problems with the PA system - you would think they would have checked that before showtime. Nonetheless, everything started on time and we had 9 corps with no breaks.

Troopers: (30H, 17P, 18CG) Reading the reviews of the last several weeks I was prepared for the worst. Glad to say that rumors of their death are greatly exaggerated. They were small (for them), but the sunburst to Ghost Riders followed by the company front with How the West was Won brought the crowd to their feet. 9th, 58.2

Pioneer: (56H, 38P, 20CG) was next in their new, 27 Lanceresque uniforms. This really is a loud, Irish in Your Face show. Danny Boy brings back memories of the late 70s - I was half-expecting a rotating company front! I thought they should have scored MUCH better - I had them well ahead of the Colts. As they trooped the stands they played a tag - some Irish ditty I couldn't hear because the crowd was cheering so loudly. 7th, 67.4

Les 'Etoiles: (32H, 20P, 12CG) Lots of energy with lots of percussion gadgetry, but nothing hummable. The crowd liked them. 8th, 67.1

Colts: (I didn't count from here out - everyone looks close to 128). Good drill moves well executed, but the music didn't do anything for me. 6th, 78.6

Magic of Orlando: A fun show to listen to. If you could take the their music and put it with the Colts' execution, you would really have something. The dark purple uniforms don't stand out on the field, and that helps cover a lot of dress and alignment nitnoid errors. Nonetheless, the showmanship was great, and they really sold the production. 5th, 80.1

Bluecoats: Some nice drill moves. I liked the music, but the drums overpowered the brass (or was it the brass wasn't playing loud enough?) in places. An off night? 4th, 81.9

Phantom Regiment: They were a crowd favorite, almost the 'hometown' corps. I'm not sure why this show is scoring so low, lots of really nice things going on out there. The horns did not generate the excitement or volume of 1996, but still sounded like Phantom. I got into this show much more than the Crossmen, I think they should have been closer. 3rd, 82.2

Madison Scouts: CLASS from start to finish. Loud with finesse. Having everyone in the same uniform in the opener makes them look lots bigger than the other corps. 1st, 87.5

Crossmen: Well executed modern jazz show. Didn't generate the excitement of Phantom or Madison. 2nd, 84.7

Editorial notes:

Beautiful night in south Jersey. (Runnemede is immediately east of Philadelphia, just across the Walt Whitman bridge). A little cool by the end of the show. Perhaps a bit too strong a breeze for the guard work.

In order of performance:

Patriots - very enjoyable show. The guard was most impressive. The kids really looked like they were having fun and the crowd responded very positively. They added some new guard work since I saw them two weeks ago. Near the beginning of the show, a young lady is dressed in a red bag that covers her whole body, including her head. When she emerges, she is dressed all in white. To the right of the field, there is a tripod about 10 feet tall with a chain hanging down. This guard person hangs from the chain and spins around. Very cool. Going on first I wasn't sure how they'd place, but 3rd seemed right to me.

Quest - following Patriots, they seemed very weak. They should have opened the show. A very small corps, they performed without a drum major. They played music from Cirque de Soleil and David Holsinger. I wonder if they played a different style if they could attract more kids in Brooklyn.

Kips Bay - I must say, their staff/volunteers definitely gets the award for most obnoxious of the night. I was seated on the aisle at the 50 - 4 rows from the top, so every corps staff/volunteers sat next to me. These people screamed at the top of their lungs for the entire show. Ruined my enjoyment of the show as their response was way out of proportion to what was executed.

Illusion - very small corps. They played music from Sandy Patty (announced in the program as Andy Patty - but I'm sure it was Sandy, unless she's had an operation I hadn't heard about) and Glad. Nice music. Enjoyable show.

Raiders - My son's reaction was "they were great! I hope they get a good score.". They played Christmas music in a show entitled A Solstice Celebration. Very nicely done. For a small corps, they project well and get a very nice response from the crowd.

Spectrum - the corps my son was waiting for. He is a big Les Miserables fan and really enjoyed this presentation. Noticeable improvement since I saw them 2 weeks ago. They do a nice job of selling this emotional music. My son's reaction - I've gotta get home and listen to the sound track (this from a boy who listened to the Les Mis sound track every night from last Saturday through Wednesday).

Tarheel Sun - What a BIG sound! Especially in this small venue following several little corps. The crowd went wild. The only full audience standing ovation of the night (besides the host corps, Jersey Surf). This corps is making great strides. I'll be very interested to see them at Div II finals in Orlando. Third place last year - we just might see them in quarters on Thursday. The corps is Div I sized at about 126 members.

Spartans - had quite a time following Sun. I thought their execution was equal to Sun but they sounded a little weak. This is a very nice show - my second time seeing it in the past two weeks. They do music by Holsinger - some pieces from the Cadets 1993 show and other selections. At one point, the brass pick up cones and use them to sing in - I guess - Latin. Very nice melodies, great percussion work.

Jersey Surf - this show should be entitled "Selections from Three of Chris Maher's Favorite shows of all time" - Muchachos 1975 Pictures de Espana, Madison 1996 A Mis Abuelos and Blue Devils 1994 Spanish Fantasy. Very well received by the hometown crowd. Soloists did a much better job than at the end of June in Elkton.

Overall, this was a fun show. I know a number of you are watching the "big boys" duke it out in Texas, but the simple pleasure of a good old fashion drum corps show - the kind I marched in - was just what I needed tonight.

Editorial notes:

Fresh from a 2 1/2 hour drive, here are my thoughts on Cumblerland Maryland.

Please note that due to laziness I finally got tickets at the show and I was front row 30 yard line stage left. Also, I am a drummer, so if I left your section out I apologize.

1st Briagdiers, 84.8, all captions but drums. I liked the show. I wish I had a better vantage point, but I did love the opening drum licks...your Achilles heel got a little less painful. Due to low seats, I was not able to feel the impacts but friends up top said your brass line moved hats off heads. I especially liked the feel of Night and Day, but wished the pit played more boards and less plates. I apologize for not really catching the guard, but hey it was a 1st view. Mr Dimeo was in top form, and Trevor won Dm, although Chris Garrett feels he was robbed...but hey Chris ya gotta conduct to win. Great show, cant wait for good seats in Scranton.

2nd, Caballeros, 82.4. Well it may be similar to Madison's version, but you made it Hawthorne. Again I wished I had better seats but the show had a lot of energy, and the drumline was pretty damn good from where i sat. Doug yu look too cool in white satin. Winona's solo in Concerto was beautiful, the guard was well staged, and I will say this very loudly.......PONZO MARCHES A LOT AND PRETTY DAMN WELL AT THAT. Plus he nailed his solos...can't wait to see it with Jimmy back...he drives this corps like no one else.

3rd Bucs, 81.5, hi drums. Wow what a difference two weeks makes. At Hershey I thought, well the brass wasn't all that. However tonight, The corps was on fire and it showed. Drums smoked me, and the guard was very visible...I cant say if clean but I saw few drops. If the middle of the show gets more Ge to it, watch em. And Dr Quinn, it was my pleasure to call you and let ya hear Regi play hun.

4th Sun, 76.3 ....What a trip the sabers were!!! Monch you had us laughing esp in Gallop. The brass was good, but need a few more horses. The drums were good, esp the toms, but bass book seemed to thin. Again, watch these guys, because ya just never know. another show I need to see from real seats.

5th Bushwackers, 72.7. I was not familiar with the music, but even tho you are small, you presented it well. If you work on the back half of the show and fill the holes, top 6 is a possibility. "T", you are a good conductor...I was impressed. Huge talented guard, by far their best attribute and they are shown off accordingly. You guys are 10 horns away from being very nice.

6th, Kilties 68.1 worth the drive!! Clean? getting there. Out dated show? maybe. Fun to watch? Oh hell yeah!!!! The bagpipes blew in Cumberland, and the mask was the show stopper. I liked the new ending, and I tell ya what....you guys should be in top 10 this year. I look forward to seeing you in Atown and hope ya safe trip home.

Exhibition: Marines D&BC and drill team. Always a treat to see both units. The Corps was a lot better than in Hershey. I will always say I love ya just cause I am afraid of the bayonettes, but really, a great show.

Exhibition: The Yankee Rebels. Loved ya, but hey I grew up on ya. The best you have been in 3 years IMHO, but to me drum corps is lame without the Rebels. To all my friends I saw, I had a blast and hey Bush great togas!!!!
