Editorial notes:

MARION CADETS: Man, are they coming along! Less nervousness, much improved guard (and book!)...this was their hometown show, and it showed. They really cooked for the (small) crowd!

AMERICANOS: I have always loved 'em. They have panache. The guard, striking in their body suits, seemed to be having a BLAST! Hey! When did they re-add the battery perc? (I missed them last year) The brass needs some practice, but this show is fun!

LES 'ETOILES: Another of my faves. Small but powerful. They found a tone center and stuck with it. NICE brass!!! The pit offers great musicality, and the sop soloist on the scaffolding was a piece of nice staging. SPEAKING of staging, the closer...well, see it yourself. It is just over the top! Great job!!!!!

BOSTON CRUSADERS: Well, Conquest is back. Now, we need tone center, pitch and a non-high school drill, and we're in business! On a happy note, the guard is surprisingly good---the best part of a disappointing show...

CAROLINA CROWN: I really am not a guard guy...I played brass...but guards are in this year, and this HUGE one is phenomenal! The opening drill moves are superb as is the sonority of the horns. BRAVO CONTRAS!!!!!!! Ten of the best musicians on ANY football field! VERY intense mello line---great drill. This show is tops!

MADISON SCOUTS: What a snooze. Having never been a huge fan, I was knocked OUT by last year's corps. This just takes WAY too long to go anywhere, and by the time it does, it's over. I DID enjoy the closer; the staging was nice as was the guard. They play well; they march well. That's about it. It is NOT vintage Madison.

CADETS OF BERGEN COUNTY: Well, two of the judges told me they were terrible tonight. Hello? I'd hate to see GREAT! They are MILES ahead of 1997! Although the music was better last year, this edition is going to set the activity on its EAR! WOW! The staging, vocabulary, phrasing, molding, pacing of this show are incredible. The guard is incomprehensible in terms of talent, and the hornline is the best in 10 years. If this is not the '98 DCI Champion, I hail whomever takes it. One thing: CHANGE THE ENDING! It is too '1997'...

Oh, a message to Senator Larry Mumper, our "announcer": Please stick to legislation, okay? You have NO business in front of a microphone (he was beyond awful). To the US Open Commission: Please heed the message to the Senator, and thanks for a FUN show!

Thank you, George O. for the recap (and the fun email), even though the scores were WAY too low tonight (I tried to have a judges meeting, but they all looked at me funny...).
