Review - July 5, 1998, Clifton, NJ

Thanks to Jackie Fritsche on r.a.m.d for this review!

Editorial notes:

"Those of us who know Jackie Fritsche know she can be highly irreverant but also very shy. After she sent me this review, I asked her if she had posted it to RAMD. She said "no, of course not." I said, "Jackie, you have to!" She said "you do it, and deal with all the hate mail too!" Well, I know RAMD'ers are much too polite to do that (HA!), so here is Jackie's review of the Clifton, NJ show on July 5th."

4:30 United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, Washington DC
Yawn...Saw them at Fort Monmouth, NJ 2 years ago. Didn't need to see them again. They are only good when you are in SERIOUS drum corps withdrawal. Went to Ladies Room...started trek to souvie stands.

5:00 Northern Lights Summer Band, Longview, WA
It's a BAND, people....get a life!!!

Got Joe [my son] a South Park Crossmen tee shirt. Had a nice conversation with the Jersey Surf people, and got me a "I'd rather be doing drum corps" tee shirt. Made Magic souvie guy look EVERYWHERE for a Magic key chain! No DICE! He talked me into a Magic pen with purple ink. Very cool!...but NOT a key chain! Got a purple Magic tee shirt. Stood in front of the CBC Souvie truck and said "Somebody tie a rope to me, in case this thing starts to SUCK me in....".....fortunately, it didn't! :)....Saw that drum instructor from the Bridgemen that is on the Brass Roots tape. Got a Diet Pepsi and made my way to the 27th row! Pant! Pant! But not before walking in front of the Northern Lights and saying..."All Bando's EXIT HERE!"

5:20 Jersey Surf, Camden County, NJ
GMPP.......Great Music Played Poorly. An old Bridgemen Arrangement...CLUNK...just reminded me of how much I love the Bridgemen...CLUNK. Pictures of Spain 98 Kerchner, Portraits of Spain, Scenes 1, 2 & 3, Corea/Sandoval. Eighth place...50.5. At least it's drum corps!!!! Woo hoo, now we're getting somewhere!

5:37 Les 'Etoiles, Dorion, Quebec
Rifles in this corps, not too bad...somewhere between good and gay. Guard wears camouflage but we could STILL see them! Seems like the drums were camouflaged, too....didn't even notice them until the next to the last song. Corps died at the end. Stuff from "The Rock" and "Dante's Peak." They're okay....geez, at least it's a drum corps!!!! Seventh place. 57.0. Hosers.

5:54 Spirit of Atlanta, Atlanta, GA
HELLO!!!!!! Welcome to Drum Corps!!!!! Spirit looks so SWEET! Gorgeous uniforms, red, off white, blue and gold.....sweet looking drums. 119 people, people! Nice park and blow. Gorgeous flags, sort of metallic looking gold, brown, orange and red. Couldn't hear the drum line...seems to be the pattern at this show. Drum line DHUT serenade *crossing eyes*...barf! This was one of the two big good surprises of the night... Liked them a lot. They lost their excitement during Sweet Georgia Brown. A shame, since that's the exit....One thing made me extremely uncomfortable. They play a hymn called "Take My Hand Precious Lord"...during the hymn the guard brings out these long planks of wood that they eventually cover with a purple cloth and turn into crosses on the field...which is a nice effect...BUT...before they do that, members of the guard kinda "slink" (that's the only word I can think of for it) up and down the planks of wood in a kind of seductive manner....very uncomfortable with that effect. Beyond not necessary. Fourth Place and well deserved. 65.0. Lots of room for them to move.

6:11 Boston Crusaders, Boston, MA
Can only remember three things about them.....Conquest in a company front....got applause from the old timers and the rifles are BUSTED! :) (That means bad.) Otherwise...snore.....whoever is talking about Boston being back, doesn't know what they are talking about! Sixth place and lucky to get it. 59.6.

6:48 Kiwanis Kavaliers, Kitchener, Ont.
An American in Paris. Ech, I'm not impressed.....Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Do this little thing where a bell goes "ding" and they nod their heads with the ding. What a bunch of ding-a-lings! Fifth place...slept through it...60.2.

7:05 Magic of Orlando, Orlando, FL
The second big surprise of the night. A good one! Dave, you and Ralphie would LOVE this....Magic lines up on the Starting Line! CLUNK! They come out in an "M" and then go into an arc for the warm-ups, but, hell, it's the Starting Line, nonetheless! Come out like a house of fire with "God Bless the Child." The horn line BRINGS IT...Holy cow, the crowd went nuts for the first time of the night! Unfortunately, we were left wanting and waiting for more. Not the kids' fault. An obvious bad choice of a closer, "The House of the Rising Sun," just doesn't cut it. Too low key for a crowd that was pumped after the opener. Definitely one of the crowd favorites, though. The color of the guard's "costumes," a really nice red adds a lot, although if they would have told me I was gonna wear a bordello costume in 1970, I would have left the guard and gone to the horn line! Really nice show. The second one worth watching of the night. Third place. 70.7.

Crossmen, Newark, Delaware
This was my most disappointing show. I had been watching the Color Guard practice over in a field for well over an hour....they looked great over in that field! And I said to my son before they went on, "This is where we'll see if they are REALLY good. They've been practicing over there for so long and looking so good. They are either gonna come out here and blow us away, or they're gonna have nothing left." What do you think happened? I counted 5 dropped rifles, 2 dropped sabres and a dropped flag...and I wasn't counting! :) Giving them credit for what they did NOT do on the field, their guard looked GREAT at practice. The best of the night, only they didn't do it on the field of competition, too bad. The Pat Metheny stuff well, it sounded okay. This was a corps that had over-rehearsed and it showed. I wanted to like them. Next time, don't practice so hard! Second place. 75.0.

The Cadets of Bergen County
What can I say about my perennially favorite corps to beat at DCI Championships? By the way YEA! is no longer prounced Yea! (As in gay)...it is now prounced Y-E-A! Well, they can call it whatever they want...it's still YEA! as in Gay to me...and if it weren't this corps would still be Garfield to me! On with the show. Don't ask me why they are getting such high scores. We started out counting 3 holes in the horn line, by the time they got finished doing this one GEA! manuever, they had 5 holes and one very crooked supposedly straight line.

Ouch. The music was incredibly flat as in no dynamics. Snore. Lots of runs and junk like that that apparently some judges must be loving. Crowd didn't find much to scream about (even the 3 in front of me with the CBC tee shirts on). There was a color guard, but it wasn't as good as Crossmen's. I give them all the credit in the world for getting away from the circus garbage they've been doing lately and getting back to some semblance of drum corps. Ho hum Stonehenge. And guess what...ho hum wins these days! First place. 82.7.

Standstill Exhibition by Crossmen and CBC.
Stood on the track and tried to blow us away! HA! They'd obviously never seen Madison (CLUNK) REALLY do that! :) They were having fun and they were enjoying themselves immensely. Happy for them. Boogie Down..it was have fun and be happy time! I enjoyed their happiness, but I prefer real drum corps.

Before the show, I tracked down "The Phantom" Ian Haas. Such a great kid. Gave him a bag of "Dice Goodies" which he more than appreciated...especially the Double A batteries! Was very proud of our Dicekid when Magic performed. Great night! Ahhhhhh....drum corps! :)

Editorial notes:

BANDETTES - I thought this corps had much more potential than that. I was very disappointed in the percussion... No Marching Snares or Tenors. 4 Basses wasn't enough to cover the musicallity of the show. Still a delight to watch, however..

CINNCINATTI GLORY - Wasn't to impressed with the props that were used. I could not figure out the point of them. I did enjoy watching them though. That was the 1st time I have seen them. Descent Drumline, Good music too...

COACHMEN - NO marching percussion at all which wasn't too impressive. Good marching for a 20 piece corps. Music was performed well. I didn't like what they were doing with the chains.

CAPITAL SOUND - They were DEFINITELY the surprise of the evening. I had never seen them before until the 5th. I LOVED the music. They could've done with out the manequins but the crowd did enjoy the guard work. The snares need WORK but it is still early... Overall, I was quite impressed with them!

MADISON SCOUTS - What else can I say but, FLAWLESS! I have been an avid scouts fan for a while but the show was the 1st time I had ever seen them in person. Great Drumline, AWESOME Sopranos and excellent guard. Keep up the good work guys!

GLASSMEN - Very impressive. I thought the Madison Drumline was better than them but my vote doesn't count. I've heard nothing but good things from people about the Glassmen's show and I can see why now. The music was VERY well performed. I noticed some MACK sized holes in the drill but will most likely be repaired with time.

CAVALIERS - I saw their show in Portage on June 12th and I must say it was VERY much improved. I did notice a hole in the snare line. I was quite disappointed with the drill at the end of the show. It wasn't totally done at the Portage show. I imagined a much BIGGER ending, but was still overall a great show!

My placements with scores...

As you can see, I thought Madison should have beaten the Cavies by more than .2 but I am no DCM judge so....

Thanks for looking at my review.
