Editorial notes:

Vagabonds - Playing " Fiddler on the Roof " this year with original garb. Small drum line, in need of a tenor line , good bass line and good pit. Horn arrangements are written for the ability of the line and the crowd enjoyed the familiar music. Decent first show for this corps. 36.1

Cinn. Glory - Showed an improved corps over last year but looks like they are far from completing their show. Nice classical show, that in a few weeks will look alot better, tonight alot of the kids looked very unsure of the drill. They played the last few minutes of the show standing still. Big drum line. 35.9

Phantom Legion - Showed big improvement from Toledo. Solid drumline with a great pit and a PR like guard ( in fact, wearing last years PR guard informs) . Small horn line . Legion will make run at the Div.III title this year. 45.1

Marion Cadets - Like last year very small with familiar music and lots of sponk. 29.3

Americanos - Entertening show with lots music you could whistle on your way home. Like many others here did not have their show complete. Look for them in the middle of Div. II. 38.4

Colts - Playing the music of GLAD, they presented a much better showing of this music tonight then three nights ago. I think as the season goes on the music will catch on especially the jazz-rock section towards the end of the program. The Biker Chicks from Hell were the Uniformless Chicks from Dubuque tonight. 60.4

Phantom Regiment - Playing a show based on Roman theme, the horn line is big and powerful once again, drum line is a little small compared to years gone by, guard is dressed in a Roman theme and added Roman Shields tonight at the end. 68.4

Cavaliers - This years show is based on traditions and by the end of the season you'll be seeing lots of them in the show, tonight the horn line stepped over the guard. The horn line and drum lines are both very talented and tight. They marched their first complete show tonight, though the guard wasn't completely in. This corps is in the running for the title this year. 69.1

Glassmen - Surprise! The Glassmen are for real, though I'm not so sure that they'll [stay] in the Top 6, they'll probly be in the Top 7. Strong drum line is driving them right now, horn line is strong but has room for improvement. Best guard they ever had, kites are back . 69.2

I suspect the reason the Glassmen won tonight is because they were the only corps that marched a complete show from beginning to end. Guards with no uniforms, rehearsel silks and standstill endings were common tonight and in Toledo. Many people I know are skipping the first half of the season for these very reasons.

Marion Cadets - 29.3
Marion did not seem as well prepared as they usually do. Although early, they will have a lot of work to do before DCM. Great drumline sound. Felt bad for bass #4 after slipping on the wet turf, because that turf is _slick_ when it get wet.

Cincinnati Glory - 35.9
Fall through of merger hurt them tonight. The show was learned very recently, and the last number had no drill. Phasing problems were also evident, but those won't last long; this corps can and will improve.

General Butler Vagabonds - 37.1
Nice arranging of 'Fiddler' tunes. Uni's were cool also. COrps plays well and has good sound for their numbers. Marching must improve however.

Americanos - 38.4
Didn't see them...

Phantom Legion - 45.1
Wow! I was really surprised by these guys. First corps of the night not to have major phasing problems. Drumline was out to play, but still needs a little cleaning. Horns were solid as well. Legion will do well...

Colts - 60.4
Great concept on paper, but the show seemed a little flat. Horns sounded good, nice blend & balance, a few small intonation problems. Drumline was o.k., average Colts quality (average for them I mean). Drill has potential but must do more by end of season if they want back into finals.

Phantom Regiment - 68.4
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz... This show is an incredible waste of talent (sorry Nikk, I know you hate that phrase). It's typical Phantom, no doubt; but when is the design staff going to wake up and start programming shows that can really get people out of their chair??? Classical doesn't have to be boring! Horns play well, except the baritone line has a raspy, closed sound. Hopefully they are still working towards the darkness they are known for. Drums were stock...

Cavaliers - 69.1
The Cavies are coming back around from the extremes of the last two years (shooooop" , for example) and giving us some in-your-face drum corps again. A very impact-filled show, with some inspired drill. The drumline also sounds VERY good for this early. Look for their numbers to really take off after they start to clean. From what I understand, the drill had just been learned a few days ago (to the end of the show, that is) and that seemed to hold them back a little bit (as it does anybody). Music however is fantastic! Much improved sound. Look for Cavs to get back in the Top 6.

Glassmen - 69.2
WOW! again! Glassmen are out for blood this year. The show is fantastic, and was the only one to get a standing in the middle anywhere. Hornline has an extremely powerful and rich sound, with real depth from top register to bottom. I didn't notice any extremly forced tone that usually comes from lines playing this loud this early in the season. Drums were playing pretty well, but to be competative they're going to have to take the difficulty of the book up a notch or so. Marching was also very clean for this point in time. A deserved victorym as G-Men were cleaner than Cavs, but look for this to change once the green maching is a little more familiar with their sets.

I would say this show could indicate that this uear will be very exciting and competative in the whole of the Top 12, what with Glassmen having a show that could get them in top 6, Crossmen trying to stay there, Cavies wnating back in, and a host of others that want to move up. I know I'll be cheering on the Glassmen, as their show seems really designed to get the audience going (as does Cavies for that matter). Who knows what will happen when basically the same lineup comes to town in July???
