Editorial notes:

Under clear, warm skies the first big show of the season was held in Hurd Stadium in Beverly, MA. This show featured the only MA appearance by the Cadets of Bergen County and the debut of the Boston Crusaders' 1998 production. Unfortunately, Hurd Stadium is not much more than a short set of bleachers so most drill patterns were unreadable. Here is my review.

Div II & III

Phoenix, Waltham, MA, 15 H,6 per,4 CG, 2 DM - 3rd 56.9 - As Phoenix showed, Mass. continues to be a hot bed for smaller but very entertaining Div III corps. Although Phoenix only had 15 horns they handled their difficult arrangement of the '1812 Overture' well. Some nice sounds came out of the 6 man pit crew spread out on the left side of the 50. The mallets executed some difficult passages well. Unfortunately, the guard has not equipment work as of yet and the last several minutes of drill have yet to be learned.

Spartans, Nashua, NH, 38 H, 22 Per, 18 CG, 2 DM - 2nd 73.9 - Fielding a solid size corps, the '97 division II champs presented a challenging production of compositions by David Holsinger. Fans of the '87 Cavaliers and the '93 Cadets will find themselves familiar with the show. Good field coverage and an active guard helped sell the show. During the percussion break pit members carried out long metal pipes that had a very effective, bright sound when used as a drum. The horn line seems to be struggling a bit with it's difficult book. As with many corps, the guard has no equipment work in the last third of the show. Overall, a good start for the Spartans.

East Coast Jazz, Malden, MA, 25 H, 25 Per, 16 CG, 2DM - 1st 78.6 - Although quite a bit smaller than the Spartans, East Coast Jazz has beat them at every meeting so far this season. The hornline handled Stan Kenton's 'Adventures in Time' quite well for this early in the season. The ballad was especially sultry with last years superb soprano soloist showing some great chops. The guard is clad in skintight red body suits that did not complement the varied body types in the auxillary. If they can clean this show up they just might make a run for the division II championship.

Division I

Boston Crusaders, Boston, MA, 50 H, 32 Per, 22 CG, 2 DM - 4th 63.4 - In their first show of the season Boston debuted a show of drum corps standards that will surely please most fans. The opening strains of 'SeaHawk' brought back fond memories of the 27th Lancers. The hornline of 50 projected well and showed some nice dynamic control. Guard is attired in black leotards which while a bit bland, are much better than the fashion nightmare of last year. Percussion, with a flashy snare line of 9, seems to be a strong point. After a brief ballad, and a familiar selection from 'Captain from Castille' a single baritone followed by a single soprano effectively announced the return of 'Conquest.' Unfortunately, halfway through the piece the corps came to a stand still. The last part of the arrangement seemed a bit flat as it did not have the usual effect of immediately bringing the crowd to it's feet. The guard had no equipment work in the last several minutes, although rifles were brought out and spun briefly. Once the show is finished and cleaned Boston should be in the thick of things.

Spirt of Atlanta, Atlanta, GA, 56 H, 32 Per, 24 CG, 2 DM - 3rd 68.7 - It was great to see Spirit back with almost a full corps. The hornline is LOUD! 'Georgia on My Mind' was listed has the opener but must of been a misprint. The arrangement of 'Swanee' was swinging and brought back memories of 'Old Man River.' 'My Freind' was familiar from Spirit's excellent '86 show. If they added some percussion during the crescendo the impact would be stronger. 'Sweet Georgia Brown' was a welcome closer. The show is very entertaining, but much cleaning needs to be done in both marching and horns. Percussion is strong. Look for a higher placement for Spirit this year.

Magic of Orlando, Orlando, FL, 61 H, 35 Per, 28 CG, 2DM - 2nd 71.1 - With todays performance Magic finally broke out of the mid sixties scoring range that they have been stuck in. Overall, the show is much better than last years' less than challenging arrangements. Magic's hornline was very loud, but really swung with the music. During 'St Louis Woman' the 30s jazz hot garbed guard effectively danced with colorful shawls. Percussion was a weak point and sounded quite muddy. This show should land them in lower half of the top 12.

Cadets of Bergen County, Bergenfield, NJ, 62 H, 32 Per, 30 CG - 1st 82.6 - As expected Cadets overwhelmed the competition. They quite simply take your breath away this year. Again, they are playing music for brass band. The show is similar stylistically to last years superb effort but they have taken it to a new level. The music, while not instantly recognizable, is arranged for the medium beautifully. The show is so intricate that it really needs more than one viewing to comprehend. 'Stonehenge' begins with a beautiful choral introduction high-lighted by some delicate playing by a horn septet. The guard, dressed in brilliant red starts off with some bland sand colored flags but quickly changes to striking magenta and green silks. After the quiet intro the show takes off. Field coverage was stretched 100 yards on several sets. Revolving and unwinding forms appeared and disappeared at breathtaking speed. The drill is amazingly difficult but very well executed for this early in the season. The all male rifle line was excellent. Watch for a repeat of last years concentric spinning box of horns. Watch also for the ripple affect from the stationary standing guard in the far right corner of the field. Some minor phasing problems were heard in the hornline during some of the more dissonant part of the show. Marching battery only had six snares but was very tight. A stunning long chord leads into the ballad which is reminiscent of last year. Execution kept them behind the Blue Devils, in my opinion, inferior offering, last year. Given how far ahead they are of themselves when compared to 1997, it is clear that the Cadets are determined not to let that happen in '98.'
