July 8, Rocky Mount, NC

Thanks to Brian T. Schriber on RAMD for this review!

Well, I finally get a chance to post some info up. I apologize for the
tardiness of getting this info out to ya, but I visited with Lone Star after
the show and that made getting back home to my net connection a bit late.

First the scores then some info then some thoughts on said scores.

  Div-II/III (Class-A/A-60)
  46.3 General Butler Vagabonds
  62.2 Delta Brigade
  61.4 Lone Star
  DNS Suncoast Sound

  Div-I (Open)
  59.3 Southwind
  66.6 Carolina Crown
  69.2 Magic of Orlando

I talked with the Suncoast booth people and the word (horrid word) is...
Inactive for the remainder of the season. They were working with some of the
other corps at the show to allow the kids to fill holes so they could march.
The kids seemed to be taking it ok, but the booster person (who let me know
some of the reasons behind) was very unhappy with the situation. Although I
had not had a chance to see the show (since they did not march) I was told
that the kids were doing a very good job on it. I am looking forward to
seeing them next year. And I hope the current staff can recover from this
very obviously emotionaly draining experience.

Now, thoughts on Lone Star and Delta Brigade. Delta looked VERY good. They
were clean, impressive with a nice show that went over well. Lone Star had
tight drums and decent marching but the horns absolutely died. Even the kids
in the corps were joking about it. So don't expect that placement to stand
very long. Lone Star has a tougher book, better drill and should clean a lot
fast. The horns were unbelievably nervous so that should improve over the
next bus trip. Both shows are good, and improved over last year, especially
Delta's drill.

Open Class. What to say. Ummm. Well. Hmmm. We have all talked about
Southwinds major problem, HORNS (midrange especially). Bad news, they still
have it. Good News, this is the BEST horn line I think they have ever had,
with some strong sop work and decent low brass. The midrange however is
either not there or muddy. BUT is an improvement of vast proportions over
horn lines past. They do remind me a lot of Spirit (mid-late 80's).

Crown only 2.6 behind Magic? No I am not on drugs, Crown is for real. They
tore the stadium apart. Magic does have a more difficult horn book, drill,
and drum book. Hmm, guess when Magic cleans we can look forward to a really
nice show. But still Crown just made a major jump. The PR guy was talking
top-12, and although it sounded dubious to me I must admit to really thinking
that they have a shot at it. Imagine that. And not only that but the show is
EXCITING! Its a lean, clean (kinda), horn wailing machine.

My only question now is: Is DCS using separate sheets for Div-I and
Div-II/III? After watching the shows tonight, I would think they have to be.
Last year at Cary (or maybe it was a few years ago) Crown beat Southwind but
since Crown was Div-II and Southwind had gone Open I figured that Southwind
had won between the two. Imagine my surprise to find out they used the same
sheets and were all judged on Open class. Tonight there should not be ANY
doubt that Southwind was better than Delta and Lone Star.

Course many people may disagree with my thoughts but hey, that's what makes
America the great shining cesspool that it is . Now I have to wait for
July 20 Winston-Salem. But I got great seats! Great SEATS huh buddy?

If I get to the Atlanta Show I will really be psyched! Talk at ya later.
