Editorial notes:

Well it's time for the Garden State Circuit to get some exposure on sCORPSboad. Corps from NJ, PA, NY, and IL competed in four divisions on a beautiful afternoon.

Standstill

Imperial Guardsmen, Belleville, NJ - Nice return to the field for a corps that last competed in the early 70's. Show was reminiscent of style of late Sixties drum corps. Drum Line marched snares, and traditional (50's,60's) Tenor drums and straight bass. Mission Impossible opener went over well. Corps is off to a good start with over 30 on the field.

Patriots, Flemington, NJ - My son plays second soprano with the Patriots, so I might not be the most objective reviewer when it comes to their show. First time out for their opener of Neil Diamond's Coming to America. They made it through it, and once cleaned will be real effective. Yankee Doodle came across well. Closer of American Trilogy also was well played until hornline ran out of gas at the end. Horns and Drums were much improved over first show three weeks ago.

Division III

Bracken Cavaliers, Levittown, Pa - Corps has fun with their Beach Show (Wipeout, Surfer Girl, and California Dreamin'). Horn Line is really young and with only 5 brass is very exposed. Guard is the strongest section of the Corps.

First Defenders, Paulsboro, NJ - Have improved much since my first viewing June 28. 8 brass are trying real hard. Familiar music such as Aztec Fire, and Magnificent Seven, are catchy tunes.

Latin Knights, NY - Sorry didn't see these guys.

Illusion, Delaware County,Pa - They have an ambitious program featuring the music of Fantasia In my opinion it is too demanding for the kids, and will be tough to clean. But, it's early yet, and they pulled an upset last year at the championship, so you never know.

Quest - Sorry missed them also.

Phoenix, Lakewood, NJ - Much improved over Levittown Show. Looked like a different corps. Loved the screaming Sop in the opening fanfare. Kids really have fun with the Latin Music show, and the hometown crowd (and other corps kids) ate it up. Sound much larger than 12 horns.

Division II

Spirit of Newark, Newark NJ - Enjoyable show that has improved since Levittown. Sopranos having difficulty with intonation at times, but overall not a bad sounding horn line. Some nice choreography displayed by guard.

Westshoremen Cadets, Harrisburg, Pa - First time out for this crew, wearing idententical uniforms to their senior counterparts. Drum Line is strong. Hornline needs work. Nice melophone solo work in You Made Me Love You. Welcome Westshore.

Mirage, IL - These guys impressed me. Very nice sound for only 8 brass. They played within their capabilities and had a pleasing show.

Spectrum, Corning, NY - Very enjoyable show opening with NY State of Mind Nice sounding horn line, energetic guard, nice Stomp routine as well. If they did a little more marching I think the would have been closer to the Raiders.

Raiders, Bayonne,NJ - Show is starting to click. When I saw them in Levittown, I thought uh oh, they'll be hard pressed to match last year, but... now the sops are starting to nail the high stuff, and mellophones are beginning to sound musical (still need work though). Guard is good. Music serves them well.

Division I

Jersey Surf, Berlin, NJ - I was a bit disappointed with these guys. I loved their '96 show. this year the program until the finale is too laid back. I think they've got very talented Sop Line but they don't (or didn't today anyhow) sell the book. Baris play well but don't project. Drum line is good but I don't think as sharp as last year's.Well there's still several weeks left in the season. They've got talent, hopefully they can inject some excitement into the show.

It's exciting to see this circuit alive and well (I got my start there 34 years ago). Who knows maybe someday another Muchachos or Bridegemen will emerge from their ranks.
