Editorial notes:

IMHO I really feel after having watch both CBC and BD from the box that the judges were way off tonight. CBC's guard, especially the rifles were flawless. BD will good were not a 91.9, they did however perform a great and long encore. Magic of Orlando, keeps promising but failed to deliver tonight. KK and Pioneer were very pleasing to watch as were the Blue Stars. Great site and a packed house. Very enthusiastic show. A must visit show, in its 20th year, for any Midwestern corps fan.

Editorial notes:

Marion Cadets -
It was announced this evening that Marion will no longer perform this season. This was due supposedly to removing two members due to disciplinary action. I know no other details, but this is truly an unfortunate situation as they had been presenting very enjoyable shows all season, proving that numbers aren't everything! I look forward to seeing them next season!

Americanos - 25H/19P/21G
The horn line got things off to a good start for the Americanos tonight with some clean articulations, but guard work seemed sloppy during the opening segment. Since the guard is so large, they can be distracting at times, like when there was a rifle toss right behind the head of a soloist during a quiet moment! But this show is improving, and has many fun moments.

Southwind - 30H/28P/14G
This show was better than last viewing and showcases all sections well. I especially enjoyed the pit work during the backfield playing by the horns during the closer! Children's March is getting stronger, even though the last push of the tune is still needing more melody for it to make sense. And the drum line, which has many nice visuals, was blocked by the guard during their feature. Still a nice show, and I look forward to seeing again!

Boston - 50H/25P/20G
This was my first viewing of Boston, and I was most impressed with the powerful horn line, even though they need to tune the opening Chester Chorale. The guard was clean, but the plaid and gray outfits make them seem very neutral on the field, so much so that their fine work is often lost. And the frames I keep reading about really do just get in the way for the rest of the show, after the corps enters through them at the start.

Colts - 63H/31P/29G
What an improvement from the beginning of the season! They received some the best crowd response of the evening, and deservedly so! The horn line has been refined many levels from earlier shows, and they were the highlight tonight! There are many spots where not much drill is happening, especially during the third tune, and the guard still has cleaning to do. The drum feature was nice, and this show is moving up!

Crossmen - 52H/33P/39G
A fun show which got the most reaction of any tonight. While the guard was a little busy for my tastes to start off Birdland, once they grabbed their flags they were incredible! Their opening work is probably the best of the season, helped by wonderful flag design. And the horns and drums are certainly doing their share, with the last growing chord bringing the crowd to its feet. Again, there seemed to be many motionless moments, and the drill had many spacing problems tonight.

Cavaliers - 61H/27P/34G
Not too much to comment on that hasn't already been said in previous reviews (I still like their '88 version of Firebird and can't figure out why they would do it again so soon...). The opening "move" got little response, except from the Cavies staff near the press box. The horns were solid, but missing soprano sound in the closing moments. The guard was very good (wouldn't the closing flags have been great in the Planets show in '95?) and the pit was exceptional, almost so much that they were a centerpiece during many moments.

SCV - 62H/30P/30G
Again, my first viewing of them, and there are many great moments. I truly enjoy the speedy drill, which is the closest attempt at a Cadets drill that I've seen. (I mean this as a compliment!) They move at some impressive speeds! The horn line carries the show with their finesse and their power! The guard has much nice equipment work at beginning and end, but mostly goes without equipment during the third section. And I've read about the incredible drum line, so I don't understand why they are so inactive for much of this show. I did enjoy the performance, even though the powerful ending didn't induce nearly as much response as either the Colts or Crossmen.

All in all, this was a red corps night, as the first four corps were in red, while the Crossmen and SCV carried the red tradition on a bit too. Thank goodness for the Cavs to break this streak! The weather was perfect, but I expected a bigger crowd. This was, incidently, the 30th U.S. Open contest!
